Last week, Working Mother magazine named Austinite Meghan Stabler “Working Mother of the Year.” Stabler’s achievement is particularly notable because she’s the first transgender woman to receive the honor. It’s “recognition of the work that I do both inside and outside of my job,” said Stabler, who is a business executive, a tireless advocate for LGBT rights, a wife, and the mother of a 3-year-old. As someone who has experienced the different treatment of men and women firsthand, Stabler said she has worked to mentor other women and make sure men are aware of “a dynamic that’s often misunderstood in the workplace. … Anybody has probably observed it but just missed it.” As a board member for the Human Rights Campaign, Stabler focuses on “LGBT workplace issues, policy, and practice.” Stabler said her accomplishments show “trans people working today are regular members of society … The discrimination we face in the workplace is significant.”
