Brian Manley‘s confirmation as interim chief of the Austin Police Department left a vacancy at the assistant level that APD says is now being filled on an acting basis by Ely Reyes, who until recently was commander of the department’s technology unit. Moving up to the commander rank in Reyes’ stead is Pat Connor. Reyes, a 20-year veteran, goes to the Fifth Floor, where executive staffers hold offices, but doesn’t entirely step into Manley’s former role as chief of staff. APD spokesperson Anna Sabana told the Chronicle Monday that Manley has not yet named a chief of staff. The longtime cop is expected to remain interim chief of police for at least a year: The city must first find a permanent replacement for departed City Manager Marc Ott, then have that new CM find a replacement for Art Acevedo, who left to take over as Houston police chief in November.
Elsewhere on the executive branch, news emerged Tuesday that Troy Gay is one of three finalists for the chief of police position up I-35 in Waco. Gay, an assistant chief at APD since 2013, started as a Waco cop in 1987.
