Benedictine Nun Promoting Responsible, Socially-Conscious Investing To Speak In Austin
WHO: Sister Susan Mika, who is an activist Benedictine nun from Saint Scholastica Monastery in Boerne, Texas, is speaking here in Austin on Thursday, October 25.
WHAT: Sister Susan Mika will give a presentation about her Socially Responsible Investment Coalition (SRIC), which uses the power of socially-concerned investors to bring to light the social justice and environmental problems that some corporations would rather hide by presenting policy changing
resolutions at stockholder meetings. She’s been doing this for 25 years.
With her coalition, she’s been successful in bringing about increased awareness of problems to shareholders – and helped bring about positive changes – from companies like Alcoa, Johnson and Johnson, General Motors, Delphi, Ford and Wal-Mart.
Just because she carries a rosary doesn’t mean it’s been all rosy. According to a San Antonio reporter, Sister Susan Mika is the leader of a group of nuns that was reportedly labeled a security threat back in May after they raised questions about Wal-Mart’s business practices.
