Top 10 Austin Layoffs

2001 was one of those years we’ll be telling our grandkids about. Pink-slipped employees carrying cardboard boxes to their cars became an all-too-familiar theme last year, as about 21,000 workers were sent home from Austin-area jobs. More than 200 local companies, most of them in the technology industry, were forced to trim jobs while others closed their doors altogether. Here’s the top 10 largest rounds of layoffs, by our count.

2. Multilayer Technology Inc. (Multek) — 1,280; closed Austin plant

3. Solectron Corp. — 1,180

4. Applied Materials — 1,100

5. Motorola — 1,100, with more coming soon
