Austin Police (including Assistant Chief Robert Dahlstrom), members of the Austin Police Association (including union President Mike Sheffield), and a contingent of community representatives (including former Mayor Roy Butler and former Council Member Willie Lewis) were in Los Angeles last week for a training program at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Museum of Tolerance. The three-day program, titled Tools for Tolerance for Law Enforcement, offers hands-on training and education on the “dynamics of racism, bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination” and their relevance to law enforcement. The trip is part of APD Chief Stan Knee’s “community relations action plan” developed in response to community concerns that police have a “double standard” when dealing with Austin’s minority communities.
