Democrat Howard Dean will formally declare his candidacy for president on Monday, June 23. Dean for Texas organizers will hold a “Declaration Celebration” that evening at 5:30pm at Ruta Maya HQ, 3601 S. Congress; organizers expect 1,000 people to gather to hear Dean’s Vermont speech rebroadcast on the Internet.

Planning for the Lance Armstrong Bikeway hasn’t been as swift as its namesake, but the city is making progress on the 6-mile east-west project — now in the engineering design stage — and will discuss the route and design features at a public meeting on Monday, June 23, at 6pm, at Metz Elementary School, 84 Robert Martinez.

The city and Capital Metro will hold a second Transit Station Planning Workshop Tuesday, June 24, at 6:30pm, at First English Lutheran Church, 3001 Whitis. Attendees will review new station area plans for the 29th Street and 38th Street stations, revised since the last workshop in April. The Transit Station Planning project is part of Cap Metro’s ongoing Rapid Transit Project study to meet federal funding requirements for a potential light-rail line on the Lamar/Guadalupe corridor.
