The Austin Cycling Association is co-hosting a public hearing with the Texas Dept. of Transportation to discuss bicycle issues regarding state roads and projects in TxDOT’s Austin district (the metro area and surrounding counties). The hearing is 6pm Tuesday, Nov. 12 at LCRA’s Hancock Building, 3700 Lake Austin Blvd.
Austin launched the first Green Building program in the country, so naturally we’re hosting the first International Conference on Green Building. More than 2,000 builders from around the globe will converge on the Austin Convention Center Nov. 13-15. Austin Energy is organizing the event with the Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Green Building Council and other national sponsors. Local participants include American YouthWorks/Casa Verde Builders, which will provide tours of its own creations — affordable, energy-efficient homes, including a straw bale home and a geothermal house. As for different shades of green, the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau expects the conference to pump more than $2 million into the local economy. More details at www.usgbc.org. — A.S.

The Austin Public Library’s Wired for Youth program will announce the winners of its mascot design contest at a party at 6pm Wednesday, Nov. 13 at the University Hills Branch Library, 4721 Loyola. Young artists submitted dozens of entries during October for a mascot that characterizes the WFY program’s mission of providing services and a special place for teens on the wrong side of the digital divide.
