• The Austin Lesbian/Gay Political Caucus (ALGPC) will meet in the AFL-CIO auditorium at 11th and Lavaca, at 7pm Monday, July 17, to plan a July 28 demonstration that will kick off “a major effort to target local sponsors of the Dr. Laura radio show.” The show’s host, Laura Schlessinger, has made headlines recently with inflammatory comments about gays and lesbians, whom she calls “immoral,” “deviant,” “unhealthy,” and “dysfunctional.” Geico Insurance recently pulled its ads from her show. To get involved or for more info, call 474-0750 or visit the ALGPC Web site at www.outaustin.org.

  • The Hyde Park Baptist Church‘s request for an alley vacation to facilitate the doubling of their parking garage goes before the Planning Commission (again), Tuesday evening, July 18, at One Texas Center. The PC’s hearing on the matter was delayed this past Tuesday, the 11th, when staff neglected to put backup materials on the issue into commissioners’ briefing packets.
  • Also last week, the PC passed the controversial East Cesar Chavez Neighborhood Plan (as neighborhood activists stalked out angrily), and recommended that City Council take up the item at their Aug. 27 meeting.
