A memorial service will be held this weekend for longtime Austin photographer Karen Dickey, who died Aug. 21 in Costa Rica. Dickey, who captured this photo of former Gov. Ann Richards, moved to Austin in 1977 and served as a photographer for the Texas Department of Agriculture for nearly 20 years. She also worked as a photographer for online restaurant guide FoodHawk.com. Much of her life’s work was devoted to documenting the Snow Monkeys in Dilley, Texas, in Frio County. A dedicated animal rescue advocate and political activist, Dickey’s most recent photography work placed her in Costa Rica, focusing her camera’s lens on the country’s extensive wildlife. Her photographs have appeared in the Smithsonian, National Geographic, and several other publications. Dickey is survived by her husband, Gary Cook. The memorial in Dickey’s honor will be held Sunday, Oct. 24, 6-8:30pm, at Scholz Garten, 1607 San Jacinto.
