Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison will not seek re-election in 2010 to her position as chair of the Republican Policy Committee, a powerful position among her GOP Senate colleagues. The DMN quotes her as saying she is stepping down “in order to explore new opportunities that many Texans have asked me to consider.” The “new opportunity,” of course, is a challenge to Rick Perry for the governor’s office in 2010. (No, she hasn’t officially said so, but this is pretty much taking it beyond the realm of speculation.)

Hutchison has been in the Senate since 1993; her current term will end in 2013.
