There’s always something happening in Austin. We try to keep you up to date in our weekly roundup of Headlines, but here’s a couple noteworthy items that we didn’t want you to miss.
• As the Chronicle went to press last night, we heard whispers of a potential break in the open meetings case at City Hall. Mike Kanin has the full scoop in “Open Meetings: Case Closed?.”
• The number of clients served by the Texas family planning program from December 2011 through May 2012 declined 50% over the same period last year, according to numbers sent to program contractors this week by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Read more here.
• On Tuesday, Council Member Mike Martinez celebrated the end of former CM Raul Alvarez’s Fast for Homes & Hope for the Eastside campaign. Alvarez began fasting one week prior in order to raise money for the East Austin Conservancy, which he founded, to meet the requirements of a $25,000 challenge grant from Spring Austin Partners.
• Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated in local schools next week. The initiative is a nationwide anti-drug campaign, and hundreds of students attended the kickoff at the Capitol this afternoon.
• The University of Texas at Austin is the home campus for half a dozen of the fall 2012 White House interns. Here’s hoping none come back too scandalized.
