There’s always something happening in Austin. We try to keep you up to date in our weekly roundup of Headlines, but here’s a couple noteworthy items that we didn’t want you to miss.
• Although the decision earlier this year by the national arm of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure to discontinue any funding for Planned Parenthood was quickly reversed, the aftermath of the dust-up is still affecting Komen Austin’s fundraising. The group has reportedly raised just a small percentage of its $1.2 million goal; 75% of raised funds go to local providers – including Planned Parenthood – in the form of grants to provide breast health services.
• Effective this week, residents and businesses in the 78701 ZIP code will pick up items from the South Congress Station Post Office. The Downtown post office was sold, but will continue operations until a new, 7,118-square-foot facility at Ninth and Congress opens.
• In the wake of 32 consecutive months of passenger growth and just in time for Formula One and the holiday season, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has begun construction on a fourth security checkpoint. This temporary addition, planned for the east ticketing lobby, is intended to reduce wait times for passengers, but will only be open as staffing allows.
