The city will hold its second prescription drug take-back day April 30, 10am-2pm, at the city of Austin’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility in South Austin (2514 Business Center Dr.) and at Corner­stone Church in North Austin (1101 Reinli). The take-back offers residents a chance to clean out their medicine cabinets and unload unused prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Needles will also be accepted. (No illegal drugs.) The service is free and anonymous. The event is held in partnership with the local office of the Drug Enforcement Administration; the goals are to help cut down on prescription drug abuse and misuse and to stop the flushing of meds, which can contaminate the water supply. The take-back is a national effort begun last year by the DEA in conjunction with local governments – 3,000 participated last time around, taking in more than 121 tons of drugs; Austin’s portion was 800 pounds.
