Donna Campbell's challenge to Doggett has been stronger than expected

I’ll go out on a limb and say that with 52% of the vote so far, incumbent Democratic Congressman Lloyd Doggett appears likely to retain his seat. But with just 141 of 248 precincts counted, the Doggett camp has to be nervous, and Doggett hasn’t made an appearance here at the Driskill yet. Campbell has 46%. The key will be which precincts remain. UPDATE BELOW:

I’ve looked at the precincts outstanding, and it could be a long night for Doggett. This district was drawn basically to pit liberal Travis County against the other seven, rural counties.

Here’s the breakdown, with number of precincts remaining:

Bastrop 4
Caldwell 26
Colorado 7
Fayette (counting complete)
Gonzales (counting complete)
Hays 16
Lavaca (counting complete)
Travis 54

Or, put another way, 53 rural/suburban precincts vs. 54 in Travis.

Wait, results just got updated again, and now 172 of 248 precincts are counted. That’s probably not enough to make up Campbell’s 13,000-vote deficit, but this may be a long evening for Doggett.
