Last week was a big one for Austin dogs; after the Beagle Uno took best in show at Westminster, several dogs and their owners gathered Friday outside U.S. Senator John Cornyn‘s Austin office to protest his continued support of the war, warrantless wiretapping and ‘aggressive interrogation.’
Several protesters came in Cornynface and others dressed up like big dogs as references to President Bush’s nickname for Sen. Cornyn, Corn Dog. There was an “all dog song” soundtrack as well.
The protest was staged by Codepink and the Movement for a Democratic Society and passersby were treated to a faint wet dog smell, as it rained on and off throughout the demonstration. “I don’t think Cornyn gets too much solace from our misery. He’s fixing to face some of his own,” said James Retherford in reference to Cornyn’s re-election bid in November.
Thorne Dreyer, clad in a full Rover body suit, said that the protesters were not in support of a specific candidate, but instead were out to bring light to one of the most conservative active Senate voting records by a member whose “popularity is lower than a parcel of puppy poop.” Newsdesk appreciates alliteration.
Side note: one honking car passing by offering support had license plates that read “RD WUFF.” Can’t make this stuff up.
