A Giant Dog

“The Grand” b/w “Qy Jara” (Sundae)

Followed by Static

“Smiles” b/w “Bones” (Sundae)

Blown-out speakers ain’t no thang. The barroom-floor splendor of A Giant Dog’s A-side benefits from the rattle, as well as singer Sabrina Ellis’ rawhide howl. “Qy Jara” stays on the floor and reaches for the blues-punk state of mind. Followed by Static pairs its A-side with a vastly different flip; “Smile” is borderline electro-pop, while “Bones” wrings out spare, folkie visions of doom. Austin woofers both. ***
