Jazz, the live music capital’s red-headed step genre, finally found a home in Austin. At least a living room. Downstairs, the Continental Club sustains cowboys, divas, and songwriters to shame any other scene. Upstairs in the intimate Gallery, similar dynasties in the making begin the weekly worship when native saxman Elias Haslanger leads his quintet back in time. Dr. James Polk tunes his Hammond B-3 to half a century ago while the bandleader, guitarist Tommy Howard, and rhythmic lock Daniel Durham and Scott Laningham hustle up Stanley Turrentine, Herbie Hancock, and Duke Ellington. A pair of four-star LPs prove the groove. “We have a loyal following at the Gallery,” humbles Haslanger. “I hope the gig lasts forever.”
