Young Guns

Danny Crooks isn’t blind to the fact that the last three years have been something of a slump for Steamboat. The weekend schedules rotate the same cast of headliners over and over and the last weekly residents to become big-draw weekend acts were Breedlove, Sunflowers, and Steamroller, all more than four years ago. For better or worse, Crooks says his midweek bar receipts seem to indicate something of a surge; the club’s owner says that young local acts such as Kitty Gordon, Amy Atchley, Galapagos, Love Supreme, Creeker, Sun Vocina, and of course, Piggiehat could have grown into solid weekend headliners within a year. “I worry there’s not a club many of them can go to,” says Crooks. “And I know none of them need to be taking the four or five months off we’ll need for the new building. It’s too bad, because so many of them are so close to building real draws. It’ll be sad if there’s nobody willing to give them the chance.”
