Featuring diverse and infectious production, as well as some of ATX’s best vocalists, CAKE skillfully pitches a group endeavor instead of a glorified Anya solo venture. KiiKii Star shines on “Don’t Need a Diamond” and “Sweats,” both leaning toward Nicki Minaj radio-ready rap. Lady Shacklin’s classic soul on “Sometimes,” discussing strength in recovery from tough times, takes it up a level. The best track, bright blues/gospel bouncer “Bad News,” puts Anya and vocalist Staci Russell on an anti-jerk stump. “There are lots of women out here who have the desire to create and express themselves, but who don’t have a support system,” says the former.
