Originally from Virginia, Cooley returned to his home state to hook up with Bob Rupe of Sparklehorse and Cracker fame. Together, they buoy Kings Highway, a production that borders on Ryan Adams Americana (“Leave This Place”), yet features flashes of Sufjan Stevens-like guitar pop (“The Shangri-La”). The 28-year-old local’s seventh album proves he’s a substantial songsmith.
