As the first-call accordion king of Austin, with a lengthy résumé boasting more than a few stellar appearances (the Clash, Joe Ely Band, Tom Petty, Flaco Jiménez, Linda Ronstadt) and a string of solo recordings, Ponty Bone’s eclectic sound remains as big as Texas itself. Maybe it’s his San Antonio roots, transplanted to the Panhandle with the results harvested here in Cowtown, that makes Dinner With Ponty so deliciously satisfying. It’s the ultimate date soundtrack, old-fashioned adult make-out music with an international flair. “Samba de Orfeu/Manhã de Carnaval,” “La Vie en Rose,” “El Cosechero,” and “A Mi Maria” evoke dancing cheek to cheek, while the closing trifecta of “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” “You Belong to Me,” and “A Hymn to Love” pretty much guarantees paradise by candle – if not the dashboard – light.
