Goodnight Lane

Minus a couple of EPs along the way, it’s been six years since Colin Gilmore’s last long-player. Goodnight Lane proves he’s spent that time well, sharpening his songs full of solid hooks, curious ideas, and a youthful vision. Previously, Gilmore attempted to distance himself from his famous father, Jimmie Dale, but this set moves closer to Texas-bred country, thus embracing his heritage and producer Lloyd Maines’ influence. It’s just the sound he’s been looking for. Like Gilmore’s previous efforts, there’s just enough sonic variety to keep things interesting, from a high-plains saunter in the title track and the fervent Tex-Mex of “Laughing Hard or Crying” to the glowing atmospherics of “Essene Eyes.” Music’s obviously in his blood, yet Gilmore’s voice remains as entertaining as any Texas songwriter he might draw comparisons to.
