As He Wanders … (Ike)

Why the Texas Sapphires aren’t plowing over the current crop of country bands is a mystery, but As He Wanders … slices through the genre. The trucking pace of “Nashville Moon” illuminates the locals’ steady course into two-step territory with “190,” Rebecca Cannon’s bid to be considered in the ranks of Kitty Wells instead of Faith Hill. Her voice is taut, strong, with a hint of gulp; “Spurned once or twice in my younger days,” she muses mournfully in “Make Him Make Me.” Knit tightly into Billy Malkus’ ropy vocals, Cannon’s voice folds into the guitarist’s with the grace of a lovers waltz (“Stunt Double,” “Riddled Days”). The Sapphires’ diamond edge comes courtesy of Malkus, who’s developed his songwriting in the style of classic country story (“Baltimore Cage”), while keeping one eye on the setting sun of the Americana West. As He Wanders … is an open invitation to follow that road.
