The Austin Chronicle is an independent, locally owned and operated alternative newsweekly that reflects the heart and soul of Austin, Texas.
A budding, second-generation Austin act (two of whose members are Chronicle offspring), Chief Rival effectively fuses the cinematic grandeur of Explosions in the Sky and, in Christian York’s sparse vocals, the Black Angels’ brooding psychedelia. The quartet’s hand-packaged, four-song debut EP is a dark, seamless 30-minute trip of shoegaze guitar and thunderous dynamics, Friday Night Lights as Western noir.
