Live at Antones

Storyville’s blues-rock is an anachronism. Seasoned with the magnificently soulful pipes of Malford Milligan, however, the seasoned Austin quintet’s flawless musicianship remains difficult to dislike. Ditto for Live at Antones. Its two CDs and DVD chronicle a January 2006 night with more than two hours of blazing that highlights the charismatic interplay between guitarists David Grissom and David Holt and the rock-solid bottom of their Double Trouble, drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon. Fan faves like “Bitter Rain,” “Bluest Eyes,” and “Piece of Your Soul” make the cut, as does a massive rendition of Hendrix’s “Spanish Castle Magic” and a deceptive, laid-back reworking of Creedence Clearwater Revivial’s “Bad Moon Rising.” With myriad other projects, Storyville can’t commit to River City’s blues-rock legacy full time, but after this outstanding set, they might want to reconsider. (Storyville reunites at Antone’s, Friday & Saturday, Feb. 23-24.)
