The Lucky Tomblin Band

In a Honky-Tonk Mood (Texas World)

Comprised of prime musicians, guitarists Redd Volkaert and John Reed, piano player Earl Poole Ball, and Sarah Brown on bass, the Lucky Tomblin Band is one of the best country bands in Austin. They even give the flawless Cornell Hurd Band a run for its money. Problem is that while they’re all great players, not one is an above-average vocalist. This is especially true of lead singer and longtime Doug Sahm cohort Tomblin, whose limited range proves a hindrance at moments that need a certain kick. In a Honky-Tonk Mood finds the band undertaking songs from notable writers from country music’s past, including Moon Mullican, Harlan Howard, Floyd Tillman, Porter Wagoner, and Leon Payne. As expected, it’s all impeccably played, perfect for your next country dance party – if you can get past the mostly dicey vocals. Exceptions include Ball’s tender reading of “I Love You So Much It Hurts” and Brown’s gritty swing through “Lonesome Hearted Blues” and torching it up on “Trouble in Mind.” Live, Tomblin & Co. sure kick up a lot of sawdust, but in the studio, they’re in dire need of a superior singer.
