Ian Moore & the Lossy Coils

El Sonido Nuevo (Spark & Shine)

Ian Moore isn’t teasing with a title that translates to “The New Sound.” While his days as an inventive guitarist haven’t been left behind, El Sonido Nuevo surprises with an assortment of songs drawn more from the pop jangle of Big Star and the guitar overdrive of Dave Edmunds than the Texas blues of Stevie Ray Vaughan. The Lossy Coils pare down Moore’s adventurousness to a trio with Matt Harris (who’s played with Roky Erickson and the Posies) on bass and Patrice Pike/Abra Moore alum Kyle Schneider on drums. Moore sounds confident as ever, simultaneously showing off a lilting falsetto and cutting a splintering solo on “Birds of Prey,” pleading for redemption on the pop-blues hybrid “Let Me Out,” and sending the album off with appropriately beautiful shimmer “Sad Affair.” It’s a new sound all right, but one that’s especially satisfying.
