The Invisible Deck (Too Pure)
With Jennifer on guitar and Laura on bass, the Brooklyn-based Rogers Sisters are actually sisters. Novel, yes. Even more mind-blowing, their last name – get this – is Rogers. All snark aside, it wouldn’t have been surprising if the Rogers Sisters had pulled some kind of trickeration. With skinny drums and all, it takes 15 seconds of fake-out before the bassline on “Never Learn to Cry” to realize it’s not that Kelly Clarkson song. This is anything but Paula pop. The Invisible Deck is raunchy and raw, and although it occasionally has a beat, it’s fattened with big garage riffs. Better yet is the back-and-forth vocal spar of sister Jennifer and bass player Miyuki Furtado that’s a dead-on new New World version of X’s John Doe and Exene Cervenka. Unlike their punk predecessors, the Rogers Sisters can’t always keep it short and to the point, and for all of the fire-drill frenzy here, there’s too much variable speed and drags like the languid and creeped-out “Your Littlest World.” The same holds for the eight-minute closer “Sooner or Later.” Yeah, it’s only two songs, but by the clock it’s over a third of the album.
