Given a recording career that goes back to the early-Seventies, you might have come across Blowfly (Clarence Reid), or if you’re a woman, he might have come across you. Yeah, on the surface, that’s the level of what we’re dealing with. Pay just the slightest bit of attention, however, and you’ll find these aren’t just dick jokes. No, these are dick jokes with a political message. At least some of them. There’s Blowfly’s public transportation solution, “The Booty Bus,” and the campaign platform “Blowfly for President” with help from Afroman rhyming, “We gonna burn down MTV and Clear Channel radio. I’m gonna get KRS-ONE to teach these whack ass rappers how to flow.” The rest, like “Your Precious Cunt,” are just vulgar. The term “blue” isn’t blue enough to really describe how raunchy Blowfly gets, but he does it with an almost charming nonchalance. And it’s funny. Just Try to take in the R Kelly-inspired “I Believe My Dick Can Fly” and not laugh. If only the beat was as intergalacticly funky as the words are dirty. As it is, “Shoot cum way up in the sky/Thinking about it just drives me wild/Fuckin’ the little nieces of Destiny’s Child/I believe my dick can fly” is still pretty good.
