The happy hodgepodge that is SXSW filled Stubb’s outdoors with a group just getting to know Cherry Glazerr on Thursday night. They didn’t sing along. In fact, the audience took a bit to get warmed up.

Clementine Creevy, 22-year-old lead singer and songwriter of the powerful L.A. trio, was kind but not cloying. She paid compliments to the crowd before launching a set list of beastly beautiful Nineties rock, sludge, pop, and shoegaze with an airy sweet voice.

Creevy’s growing leaps and bounds artistically, says the press. On stage, she’s cooly confident, flashing a shimmy here, a wiggle there, enjoying herself even in the human assemblage of fans there just to see. She proved controlled, only sometimes constrained; 2014’s hoarsely growled “Had 10 Dollaz” felt muffled.

This year’s excellent Stuffed and Ready and 2017’s great Apoocalipstick got a workout with “Self Explained,” “Nurse Ratched,” “Juicy Socks,” and “Dadii” each coaxing the crowd to just a bit more head-nodding assent. “Stupid Fish” banged hardest, with Creevy breaking away from her mic to shred on high before singing upside down on “Told You I’d Be With the Boys.”

“I did a head flip earlier today,” said the frontwoman to her bandmates as they waited in line at nearby vegetarian food truck Arlo’s. She mimicked herself getting stuck in a painful position. “I was like, ‘Oh, shit. Nothing about that was good.’ I felt it in my spine.”
