Father

Young Hot Ebony

Father comes from the same generation of Atlanta rappers that’s given us Young Thug and iLoveMakonnen. Meaning he’s of a lineage of weirdos currently turning hip-hop on its head. Father produces everything on his Young Hot Ebony mixtape, bringing the world to a slurring, wormy halt. Marquee song, “Look at Wrist” has Father chanting the word “wrist” over and over a beat that’s made of about three different clanks. It’s weird, dreamy, and detached from our logic, which seems to be the running theme here. Next, he wonders aloud why he “can’t cry money instead of tears.” There’s something confident and confrontational about Father’s deadpan flow. He doesn’t lose sleep over a couple of murdered kids on “2 Dead, 6 Wounded,” because he “got insurance,” but earlier he’s co-opting Dragon Ball Z attacks as flexes. Keep an eye on this one.
