Rae Sremmurd
Sremmlife (Interscope)Closest comparison might be the Backstreet Boys. The two teen brothers from Mississippi who make up Rae Sremmurd couldn’t be more cuddly. Bandanas, Kanye denim, standing five-feet-five-inches and maybe 100 pounds soaking wet; you’ll crush on them if you grew up on narcotized Southern rap. They broke out last year on the back of the sparse, swaggy “No Type,” and mantra-creating “No Flex Zone,” both of which anchor Interscope debut Sremmlife. In a world where even Lil Wayne can’t get an album out on time, it’s a wonder that non-singles like the low-res “Unlock the Swag” and squeaky “Up Like Trump” bang as hard as they do. Standout “This Could Be Us” finds the boys taming their flexes into a genuine, panty-tossing ladies’ jam. It’s one-note, sure, but we’re rooting for Rae Sremmurd. (Thu., 12:30am, Bar 96)
