Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno lounge

L.A. rocker Bethany Cosentino told the Chronicle, somewhat morosely, in March, “I’m well aware Best Coast won’t last forever.”

Not everything lasts, true – including UT’s Erwin Center, which has hosted hoedowns in this town since 1977, and which will likely be demolished before its 40th birthday. Some things stick: That year Def Leppard was a mere kitten; in August, the grizzled British rockers bring Pyromania to the Austin 360 Amphitheater.

Check out the Chronicle‘s picks of road show highlights this summer, just a sample of over 200 events listed in our new Summer Fun calendar.

Two Seventies staples from Europe: On June 6, the Gipsy Kings return to their Moody Theater perch to celebrate 25 years dominating flamenco with last year’s excellent Gipsy Kings Live. Def Leppard shreds the masses at Circuit of the Americas August 23, coming off a rowdy sprint with KISS.

The aforementioned L.A. duo Best Coast erupts into Emo’s June 23, riding brand-new LP California Nights, and armed with guitarist/keyboardist Joe Bautista. Coming off third LP, last June’s Stay Gold, Swedish sisters of First Aid Kit return to Austin, this time to enchant the pit at Stubb’s.

Blues statesman Buddy Guy, 78, ambles into the Moody Theater, showing no signs of slowing down. Country icon Shania Twain insists this Erwin Center jaunt is her last, but who can really tell these days? Regardless, it’s the place to be August 9 – just in case.
