Everything, Everything (V2)
You have to love any DVD that trumpets “Warning: This performance contains strobe lighting throughout!” No unwanted epileptic Pokémon shenanigans for Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, and certainly not for longtime DJ Darren Emerson, who exited the group earlier this year. Still, as a record of the live Underworld experience, this nine-track arthouse artifact is more than enough to get your ass in seizure mode. While the Everything, Everything audio CD serves its purpose as well as one might expect, it’s the expanded DVD that really thrusts you into the sonic melee captured at Glastonbury, Fuji Rock, Brussels, and some nameless Chicago clubzone. Look, there’s Karl Hyde muttering non-sequitorial burblings into the mike while prancing about in a horizontal-striped French sailor’s pullover, and partner Smith hunched dreamily over a keyboard rack, pounding away. The music, for what it’s worth, is a bit more chunky, a tad heavier on this live outing than on the original CDs, and much of it is drawn from Beaucoup Fish, with the occasional medley from earlier outings thrown in for good measure. Add to this 90 minutes of “live Tomato video art” (Tomato is the design collective Hyde and Smith have co-opted), outtakes, widescreen 16:9 anamorphic aspect ratios (yay!), and the occasional extra, and it’s almost as good as having been there (and there, and there, and there) yourself.
