A Little Death

A short-fused firecracker when she’s fronting punk party-crashers A Giant Dog, singer Sabrina Ellis reels it in as best she can on the debut full-length from Bobby Jealousy, the local quartet she leads alongside hubby Seth Gibbs (Leatherbag, the Archibalds) and British import Mark Stoney. Recorded at Gibbs’ Superpop Records, A Little Death packs British pop (“House of Mirrors”), retro soul (“Shake Me, Baby”), and freeway-ready classic rock (“It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This”) in charming disarray. Wedging Stoney’s sprightly “Pass You By” between three-part belters “Take You On” and deadly “Hold the Woman” does little for the album’s cohesiveness, but that loose grip makes Bobby Jealousy an enticing new taste. They’re playing with fire, but they’re strapped with a “Flamethrower” that can handle any heat.
