Echoes: The Best of (Capitol)

Gilmour, Waters, Mason, and Wright make the interesting choice here of taking 26 of the band’s finest pieces and scrambling the track order. The upside: It masks the incomplete feeling of concept-album fragments with captivating fades like Dark Side of the Moon‘s ultra-mellow “Us and Them” into the slo-mo jam of “Learning to Fly.” The downside: the vertigo-inducing jolt of Gilmour’s Division Bell catatonia flowing into the utter lunacy of Syd Barrett’s “Bike.”
