Out of the Blue

Providing a gateway into an alternate mindscape and revealing the forgotten strains of musical movements, locally based reissue label Unseen Worlds, formed February 2006, continues to receive universal acclaim from the likes of The New York Times, The Wire, and Pitchfork Media, following the release of San Antonio native “Blue” Gene Tyranny‘s 1977 avant-garde gem, Out of the Blue. The Austin imprint resurfaced recently with Lubomyr Melnyk‘s KMH, a minimalist yet engulfing piano suite in continuous mode. “It could be a collector’s item, but why should it be?” asks co-founder and aural archeologist Tommy McCutchon, who works at UT’s Fine Arts Library. “We’re trying to make available really adventurous music that’s easy to approach to hopefully transform the way you look at things.” Sister label Autobus Records (see “Collective Wisdom,” May 11), which McCutchon oversees, is prepping Mark David Ashworth‘s remastered full-length debut, Viceroy, due later this month, along with upcoming efforts from Brazos and Sparrow House.
