Hated: GG Allin & the Murder Junkies Special Edition

For his senior film, NYU student Todd Phillips filmed GG Allin being released from jail, onstage, and back to jail over the course of the early 1990s. Phillips went on to make stoner-friendly movies like Old School and Road Trip, but Hated was a lowbrow-beating endeavor, a curious portrait of a punk rocker who, if it hadn’t been for music, probably would have been visited by death sooner. Allin’s confrontational, righteous nature is captured in some filthy onstage acts and an NYU “spoken word” performance that empties the room. (In some choice commentary, Phillips says he got the gig by saying Allin was “like a Henry Rollins.”) Extra interviews with Dino Sex, the Murder Junkies’ creepy drummer, and brother Merle Allin add, uh, color, but watch the interview with GG’s bespectacled mother for the story about naming her newborn son “Jesus Christ” after it came to his father in a vision.
