16 Horsepower

Live (Alternative Tentacles)

The word eulogy is synonymous with 16 Horsepower’s sound. So it’s fitting that this 2-DVD set eulogizes the gothic Denver grindhouse the only proper way: live. Disc one features Brussels, 2002, but it’s the second disc that reveals concerts from a younger, hungrier band, including a 1996 German performance, as well as 16HP’s final show in 2004. Beforehand, bewitching frontman David Eugene Edwards silently paces backstage like a manic preacher. Onstage, his eyes flutter and lips twist with rapturous bliss as a celestial voice invites “Harm’s Way.” Why wasn’t he offered a role on Deadwood? ***
