If like any self-respecting Austinite you see Moving Panoramas perform 10 times annually, a gradual lineup shift makes it easy to overlook the sonic evolution that’s taken place since the dream rock outfit’s 2015 debut, One.
Non-local listeners, on the other hand, will be blown away by the density of Leslie Sisson and company on long-awaited second strike In Two, arriving Feb. 22 on Modern Outsider. For starters, what once was a trio now configures as a quintet, with an entirely different lineup backing the singer/guitarist. Phil McJunkins’ pedal steel goes a long way in the group’s spacey essence, while vocalist/keyboardist/percussionist Cara Tillman plays no small role in the evolving dynamics showcased on the group’s sophomore effort.
Moving Panoramas’ musical thickening is evidenced in preview single “Baby Blues.” A driving tempo fires beneath Sisson’s typically exquisite guitar tones, rolling into a hook that jumps with Tillman’s backup vocals. The longish track ultimately snowballs into a kingdom-come moment of shoegazey audio overload.
