Death metal’s black hole exerts such a gravitational pull only the strongest acts can avoid its oft-mindnumbing conventions. Enter Tribulation, which achieves escape velocity with its second LP, folding the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, ambient music, and even reggae into its Swedish cauldron. Formulas‘ 75-minute opus unleashes a tidal sweep that’s damn near orchestral, all while retaining the proper blast beats and bipolar vampire vox. In Tribulation’s hands, the genre sound less like death than new life. ****
