DJ Rapid Ric

Fuze, Wednesday, March 12

DJ Rapid Ric’s performance didn’t come off as a showcase of his own abilities as much as it was a reminder to those in attendance of the sheer talent the late Pimp C held. Running a set of Pimp-produced beats, the Austin spinner satisfied the still small crowd with precise blends that pumped C’s expansive portfolio. Never mind that all the smoke from the fog machine had cleared out by the time he finished maneuvering through Austin’s heavy traffic half an hour late. Ric stayed busy on the switches and quiet on the mic, only using it to remind us we’re paying tribute. The show, therefore, went on as a memorial service, a grimy, chopped, screwed, head-bobbing, memorial service, with the audience moving casually in place on their trip down a Pimped-out memory lane. As his set ended, the master of ceremony leaned into the mic again and thanked the room before segueing into the hook from the Pimp-featured Master P track “I Miss My Homies”: “How could it be? Somebody took my boy from me. My best friend’s gone, and I’m so all alone.”
