Idgy Vaughn

Idgy Vaughn, a small town girl who does it better. The local singer-songwriter’s music has been called “twisted Americana,” and that might sum up a good deal of her songs, though “jaded” or “scorned” might work better. The redhead mounted the stage in a long, paisley dress and she and her threepiece band proceeded straight to opener “Mr. Wrong,” a jaunty bit of country whose flames were fanned by Vaughn’s wiser-than-her-years smirk. The next song, “Dragging the River,” about killing her boyfriend, was no less smoldering in its galloping beat. No doubt Vaughn has a great voice; she’s “a loaded gun” as well as a good songwriter. She treads the country music landscape ably, with songs about heartbreak and disillusionment bucking in the stable, and last year’s Origin Story is a good starting point. The woman-done-wrong has been amply voiced in folk music, and Vaughn has it in her to wail. She just has to let her guard down first. Or is that again?This article appears in March 16 • 2007.
