Thursday’s Flavor: Rich Aucoin

I first was introduced to Rich Aucoin when I was in Vancouver slinging cream at a Virgin Festival that Muse was supposed to play at. Muse ended up backing out, and my consolation prize was My Chemical Romance. My buddy Todd was shooting some photos of Aucoin and telling me about his plans to ride his bike across Canada while playing concerts synced to How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I rode my bike from Long Beach, Calif., to Maine one summer, so he wanted to get me in touch with him.

That was 2006. Since then, Aucoin has traveled back across Canada (not on his bike) and spent more than a year recording his new EP, Public Publication, and upcoming full-length. It sounds like a mixtape incorporating Daft Punk, Arcade Fire, and the Beach Boys. He played our Ice Cream Man Party at Club de Ville on Tuesday and had people waving glow sticks during daylight hours and singing along. I love being reminded of my early days of moshing and skanking to SoCal ska bands in high school.

Remember, it’s not how you dance; it’s how long you dance.
