Young Widows
Waterloo Park, Nov. 83pm wasn’t necessarily a good look for Young Widows. Playing directly into the Saturday sun, the Louisville, Ky., trio, especially singer/guitarist Evan Patterson, looked uncomfortably red. In the end, however, it only added to their blistering set, as much as the six vintage Emperor amps surrounding them like Stonehenge. The Widows launched into opener “Took a Turn,” from latest live/studio album Old Wounds, and proceeded to play the whole damn thing start to finish, linchpin drummer Jeremy McMonigle and bassist Nick Thieneman perfectly replicating its bottom-heavy backhand. That rhythm section is Young Widows core, and even with earplugs, their welded noise still made ears ring. “Swamped and Agitated” they were.
