If music festivals were bowling strikes, this weekend’s third annual Fun Fun Fun Fest in Waterloo Park would be sitting pretty on a turkey. With that theme in mind, OTR asked booker Graham Williams to help handicap the festivities. Check out the Chronicle’s preview as well.
Off the Record: What are three things that people probably don’t know about FFF Fest?
Graham Williams:
1) It’s named after a Big Boys song.
2) It was originally a single show that I and the Alamo Drafthouse put together that snowballed into a festival. Could have never ended up happening, but sort of by accident, it was born.
3) It’s a fest put together for people who don’t really like fests….sort of the anti-fest in a weird way. Not sure if that’s unknown or obvious.
OTR: Who are three bands you’re looking forward to this year?
GW: Man….so many… Dead Milkmen of course, Integrity, Kool Keith/aka Dr. Octagon. I’d say the National, but they’re on at the same time as Dead Milkmen, who I can’t miss, so…
OTR: Who are three bands worth getting to the park earlier for?
GW: Man, so many. I feel bad only saying three…
1) Frightened Rabbit from Ireland are awesome indie rock stuff.
2) Broken Gold. Really good new local band with guys from the Riverboat Gamblers. They’re kinda like Replacements.
3) Dengue Fever. They have to fly to a fest in London, so are playing early. Best to get there by 2pm for them.
OTR: What are three collaborations you’d like to see this year?
GW:
1) I’d like to see Gibby Haynes come out and sing the song he sang with Dead Milkmen on Metaphysical Graffiti.
2) Maybe seeing Roky Erickson come out and do a few songs with the Black Angels as they’ve been doing a few sets together.
3) I know some Quicksand guys will be around so you never know… Maybe they’ll get up with Rival Schools/Walter and do a Quicksand song? Doubtful, though.
OTR: What three bands would you like to reunite in the future?
GW: There are MILLIONS so that’s like Sophie’s Choice. Jawbreaker is top of my list, the Replacements, Operation Ivy.
OTR: What are three songs you hope Dead Milkmen play?
GW: “Dean’s Dream” for sure… “I Walk the Thinnest Line”…. and “Bitchin’ Camaro” of course.
