Rhapsody Day Party

Mohawk, Thursday, March 15

In the smackdown between Swedish darlings o’ the day Peter, Bjorn and John and old guys Robyn, Pete, and Sean, it wasn’t even a contest. On the other hand, Robyn Hitchcock, Pete Buck, and Sean Nelson (of Harvey Danger) were spectacular in a set leaning heavily on material from the Hitchcock’s Olé! Tarantula. Sure, they were limited to acoustic guitars, but who needs a full band when your shirts are that loud? The set also reached back to the Soft Boys for a glimmering version of “Queen of Eyes,” as well as to Hitchcock’s solo days for Buck collaboration “Madonna of the Wasps.” Also on the bill was the Oxford Collapse, whose indie punk couldn’t hide the fact that the bass player sounded like Geddy Lee (bonus points for the John Prine cover). And midlineup entry Oakley Hall had one of the more bizarre moments when the singer stepped to the mic and started reading lyrics scrawled on her palm. Nice. Still, they’re at least two members and one beard short of assured blog stardom.
