Black Joe Lewis: The Next Generation

If you’ve seen Black Joe Lewis & the Honey Bears’ white-hot blast of blues recently, you might be wondering why they’ve taken to wearing shirts from Star Trek onstage.

“I saw The Next Generation first,” the local singer relates. “I even went to a convention with my dad when I was a kid. Star Wars is cool, but Star Trek is the one I got into the most.”

Seems like a stretch to match R&B and Captain Jean-Luc Picard in song, but it isn’t for a lack of trying.

“We have an instrumental called ‘Enterprise,'” says Lewis. “I’ve tried to incorporate it into songs, but it hasn’t worked out yet. It’s hard to write a good song about a TV show.”

When we suggest “The Mothership Connection,” he agrees: “There’s always ‘The Mothership Connection.'”
