It’s disconcerting to associate the literary icon of your youth with songs and poems about getting stoned and doing naughty things with naughty girls. But to love Shel Silverstein is to love the joie de vivre of a story like “Peanut Butter Sandwich” as well as the bawdiness of “Freakin’ at the Freakers’ Ball.” Silverstein’s entire oeuvre is cherry-picked here, performed by his friends Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson.
