The Starlite
624 West 34th, 374-9012
Sunday Brunch menu, noon-5pm, reservations accepted.
The newest entry in Austin’s Sunday brunch sweepstakes is The Starlite, a hip new eatery housed in a cozy mid-town cottage a few blocks
north of the UT campus. At chef Chris Howard’s first solo venture, he’s serving a fusion-style menu with a definite Asian flair. The bar is currently experimenting with a variety of mimosas, mixing the requisite champagne with exotic fruit purees such as blood orange. They also boast a fiery Wasabi Bloody Mary which is guaranteed to zing you awake. The brunch menu here is simple with only seven entrées and a longer list of items available a la carte. After careful consideration, we’re headed to Starlite for the Tokyo Breakfast ($9), salmon croquettes with sriracha butter, served on a bed of aromatic jasmine rice topped with a poached egg and an order of Lippy’s Breakfast ($8) — two fried eggs with cheddar grits, crispy bacon, Jimmy Dean sausage, Tater Tots, and blueberry flapjacks. One of the best things about this new spot is that they serve brunch all afternoon, so party-hearty and sleep as late as you like.
